SMP Suster Pontianak is a
school particularly focusing on education. It is located at Jalan A.R. Hakim
No.106 Pontianak. Sisters of SFIC established it in 1913 with the former school
named Sekolah Rakyat (SR). On 1 August 1934, Sekolah Rakyat was changed into
Sekolah “MULO” with the name “Saint Lucia”, established for the province of
West Kalimantan. There were only 8 students at that time.
On 19 December 1938,
Sekolah “MULO” got the “Disamakan” status. 3 years later, precisely on 19
December 1941, the school was imposed to be sealed for undecided time because
Pontianak City was bombed by Japan. The number of student at that shocking
time:
Preliminary Class : 17 students
1st Grade :
22 students
2nd Grade :
15 students
3rd Grade :
11 students
Principal :
P.C. Schram (Sr.Alberta)
Teachers :
M.C. Groot (Sr.Afra)
H.J.C. Theuws (Sr.Helena)
Providentially, Sekolah
“MULO” was ready to run its activity again on 1 August 1947. A year later, 1st Grade
was settled only for subsidized-girls students as the path of conversion from
“MULO” to all-girls’ school. On 15 November 1948, the government gave the
legitimacy for the operation by SK Pemerintah Daerah Istimewa Kalimantan Barat
No.399/A.P.Z. On 1 August 1950, the school was changed into SMP Putri with the
commitment to use Indonesian language.
In the beginning of 1973,
SMP Putri Bersubsidi Pontianak started to admit boys as its students. The
school was transformed once again into SMP Suster. Recently, precisely in July
2004, SMP Suster applied Competency Based - Curriculum, for first-year
students, while the second-year and third-year students study in the same
curriculum as other schools in Indonesia.
